Screen Time in the Digital Age: Navigating the Attention Economy
The average person now spends nearly seven hours daily staring at screens—a 50% increase from a decade ago. Smartphones, social media, and streaming platforms dominate modern life, reshaping how we work, socialize, and relax. While technology offers undeniable benefits, excessive screen time has been linked to sleep disruption, anxiety, and diminished attention spans. As we navigate this digital landscape, finding balance is crucial for mental and physical well-being.
The Neuroscience of Screen Addiction
The allure of screens is deeply rooted in brain chemistry. Social media platforms exploit dopamine-driven feedback loops, where likes, notifications, and infinite scrolling create compulsive usage patterns. Neuroscientists compare this to slot machine mechanics—intermittent rewards keep users engaged.
The consequences are profound: studies show that heavy screen use fragments attention, reducing productivity by up to 40%. Evening exposure to blue light further disrupts circadian rhythms, suppressing melatonin and impairing sleep quality. These effects are particularly pronounced in children, whose developing brains are more susceptible to digital overstimulation.
Generational Impacts
Screen time affects all age groups differently. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screens before 18 months and limited use for young children, yet many toddlers regularly interact with tablets. Among teens, 45% report feeling "addicted" to their devices, with social media fueling anxiety and body image issues. Adults, meanwhile, struggle with work-related screen fatigue—knowledge workers average just three hours of deep focus in an eight-hour workday. The ubiquity of screens has blurred boundaries between work and leisure, making digital detoxes increasingly necessary.
Practical Solutions for Digital Wellness
Reclaiming control over screen time requires intentional strategies. The "20-20-20 rule"—looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—reduces eye strain. Designating tech-free zones, such as bedrooms, fosters healthier sleep habits. Apps like Forest encourage focus by gamifying phone-free intervals, while scheduled digital detoxes help reset compulsive behaviors. Quality matters as much as quantity: replacing mindless scrolling with video calls or educational content ensures screen time remains meaningful.
The Future of Intentional Tech Use
As awareness grows, tech companies are responding with wellbeing features. iOS and Android now include screen time trackers and app limits. Minimalist devices like the Light Phone cater to those seeking digital simplicity. Meanwhile, attention-training apps such as Freedom and Offtime help users cultivate healthier habits. The challenge lies in redesigning technology to serve human needs rather than exploit psychological vulnerabilities.
Conclusion
Technology is woven into modern existence, but its use should be deliberate rather than habitual. By setting boundaries and prioritizing real-world connections, we can harness technology’s benefits without sacrificing well-being. As attention becomes our most precious resource, learning to protect it is essential.

Interactivity and Engagement
Student engagement is an important aspect of student success. “Substantial research suggests that student engagement varies by the environment created by the school and teacher, and by the learning opportunities teachers create in their classrooms” (Nguyen, Cannata & Miller, 2018). Creating fun learning opportunities, using technology and game-based learning, is a great way to connect to student’s interests and encourage engagement. Technology in the classroom is not only good for engagement but also addressing specific student needs. “Research has shown that game features including clear goal/rules, learner control, challenging tasks/feedback and repetition enable educators to create individualized learning environments wherein students are able to take more active control of their learning and improve their achievement vis-à-vis desired learning goals” (Shin, Sutherland, Norris & Soloway, 2011).
There are several advantages and disadvantages to using technology inside of the classroom. As stated previously, technology provides a pathway to student engagement and provides a way to connect to student’s interests. Students may like to use technology in their free time or may enjoy the content that is being taught in an exciting way via technology. Many game-based learning applications also provide educators the opportunity to apply adaptive, individualized content to every student in their class. In my personal experience, students have enjoyed using tablets/computers in the classroom. It captured their attention, and many students were more willing to practice skills that they otherwise struggled with. “There is evidence that technology-enhanced embodied learning can have a positive impact on at least one of the three domains of learning: (a) Cognitive domain, (b) affective domain, and (c) psychomotor domain. A number of studies reported an increase in students’ conceptual knowledge on a variety of topics related to mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, or language learning” (Ioannou & Ioannou, 2020).
Relying on technology in the classroom can also bring many disadvantages. Teachers must manage students, knowledge, and resources which poses complex problems for those teachers who must also develop skills in order to use technology at the right times in appropriate ways (Trigueros, Sandoval & Lozano, 2020). Another challenge is students may misuse the technology and become disengaged from the content, trying to access unapproved websites and games. There may also be issues such as network connectivity and devices. In my personal experience, I have relied on using technology in a lesson only to have something go wrong. It’s important to have back-up plans when using technology in the classroom.
There are many different apps, websites, and other technological tools that are beneficial to an elementary classroom. For example, Quizziz, Nearpod, and Prodigy are three useful tools to implement with students. Quizziz is easy to connect to and works on any device with a browser, including computers, tablets, and mobile phones (andriod/iOS).  There is a “free” option using quizziz, but to use all features and functions there is a subscription fee. Quizziz is a fun way to engage learners with game-based interactions. Students just need to go to the website and type in the access code to get started. Teachers can use this for introducing concepts, reviewing concepts, classroom discussions and more. The results provide teachers with a quick formative assessment that can inform future instruction. In the example I provide at the beginning of this post shows how you can use Quizziz with primary students who might be learning about two-dimensional shapes in real life during their math unit. I reinforce the concept to students, asked them multiple choice questions using pictures and I also ask students to draw each shape discussed.
Nearpod is another fantastic tool to use in the classroom. Nearpod helps teachers create interactive presentations. Teachers can add quizzes, polls, videos, collaborative boards, virtual field trips, and more. Nearpod offers free and subscription based options and easily connects on most devices, as it runs on a web interface and as an app. Teachers can easily see if students understand a concept by reviewing specific student interaction within the slides. Nearpod can engage learners and ensure they are participating in a safe and fun way. Students can answer questions and post on discussion boards anonymously. Nearpod can be used for asynchronous or synchronous distance learning and face-to-face classroom learning.
Prodigy is another classroom tool for students between the grades Kindergarten and eight grade. It is an adaptive math game that mimics a role-playing fantasy game.  Prodigy can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices, as well as be played via the internet. Prodigy is free to play but offers extra content for a price. Prodigy is a great way to engage learners by playing a game while learning important math concepts.
As stated before, student engagement is a critical component of student success. What really matters is the teaching, not the technology used to do it. Technology is a tool that can help enhance student engagement and learning, but it is not necessary for engagement and learning to occur. “When educational games are used efficiently, students can have increased engagement in learning and grasp abstract concepts easily. Nevertheless, not all educational games are designed equally” (Kim, Deater-Deckard, Evans, Norton, & Samur, 2017). It’s important to research and test out games that you want to implement in your own classroom. Consider cost, connectivity, user-friendliness, how you will use the tool, and more. Not all game-based learning creates a structure of rigor for the content in question. It is also essential to consider that technology is not only teaching resources that expand materialistic possibilities, but is also a productive and recreational environment of culture, politics, and economics which can effect the lives of teachers and students (Digón-Regueiro, Gewerc-Barujel & Cristina Pérez-Crego, 2021). Students interaction within their classroom environment can greatly determine the effectiveness of engagement and learning.

Pocket
You can find many amazing articles on the internet, but you usually don't have enough time to read them all right away. Yes, you can bookmark them, but it can become really messy finding the right one later if you have more than a few of them bookmarked. So instead of struggling with that, why not use Pocket? By using the app, you can save articles to read offline without any of the annoying ads and popups, and you can even search through your saved articles. It is really a great way to research and learn about new topics. Price: Free Available on: iOS and Android
Forest
Whatever you do, Forest is the app that will help you stay focused on the here and now things. The idea is very simple: create a forest full of trees where each tree represents your focused time. You simply plant a seed and for a specific period of time, while the tree is growing, you can't use your phone. If you by any chance start using your phone the tree will whiter and you will have to do it all over again. Once the tree is fully grown you can put it in your forest and start using your phone again. Price: iOS ($1.99) and Android (Free) We could have easily mentioned some other well-known apps like Evernote, Google Drive, and others, but since everyone knows those apps very well, we decided to focus on the lesser-known apps that can be of great value to college students. In case we forgot to mention apps you frequently use, please let us know in the comment section. Read the full article

Could I ask you about your writing process? I've been working on my own series for a few years now and just wanted to know how you went about it.
Aaaahaha, well you should take my advice with perhaps a dumptruck of salt because this isn’t something I do for a living--only for fun, really. There are many authors on this site and others who are much more dedicated and work their butts off because this is their job, and I imagine they have a very different approach from me (because everyone writes differently AND because food on their table depends on them having discipline that someone writing solely for fun and with no deadlines might not need as much).
I use the software Scrivener to keep my books/series/research all in once place and easily accessed and in order. Lots of people just use Microsoft Word or even something like Google Docs or other free software, but I’ve been using Scrivener for a few years now and have now graduated to using it for my fics and such as well. It’s a GREAT piece of software and WELL worth the price.
It’s a bit like Photoshop for writing, though; it’s amazing at what it does--help you track and target your writing, format it down to the finest point, compile everything for dozens of different formats, and a BEAST at research organization (there’s even a name generator for different cultures!)--but it has a little bit of a learning curve. The good thing is that there are several tutorials for the basics, plus a free trial so you can give it a shot before actually purchasing it. It’s available for Windows and MacOS, though the MacOS version is more polished (I run into annoying bugs with the Windows version sometimes--nothing that adversely affects the work, just annoying). There’s also an iOS version, and everything syncs through dropbox so you can work across different OSs.
Scrivener helps keep me honest; it’s got great project targets where you can tell it when you want to finish by and how long you want the piece to be, and it’ll give you a target word count each day to reach that goal, or just do the old-fashioned “I want to write ##### words a day” and work that way.
It’s also great for organization--there are corkboard notepad views so you can plot everything out and move things around if necessary, you can view images directly within the program (useful for landscapes or portraits of your characters, for example), and there are panels for organizing URLs as well. There are also built-in templates for things like fleshing out a character or a culture if you’re creating things out of whole cloth.
As for the actual process, I start from the most basic thing of a general concept--like for Fellfire Summer, I wanted to write a story about cities that float in the sky. From there, I go on to thinking about the plot and the main characters. I’m not sure if that’s what is really ‘right’ or if it’s what anyone else does, but it works for me! If my concept is a place, as it has been for this series, then I think about what kind of world would have given rise to a place like that--how would a city float in the sky? Why have a city in the sky instead of on the ground? That drives an idea of the conflict that might surround the place, and the kinds of people who might find themselves involved in that conflict. Also important for me are dynamics between different characters, since I wrote stories with romance in them. As important as the characters themselves are the way those two characters interact. Maybe I’ve got two great ideas for characters, but they’ve got no chemistry or spark between them--then I’ve got to retool.
Once I have the basics of the story, I start actually writing it down. This starts off like a skeleton in my Notes app or similar. Very very very basic ideas like “Opens in X. A meets B when Y happens. A and B investigate. B gets kidnapped by C. A rescues, together they take down C. End in Z.” Once I know exactly what the plot is (the rough idea of it at least) and the major players, then I start adding muscle--by the end of the muscle stage, when I’ve got some details and descriptions and even dialogue that comes to me at odd intervals and I think “lol they’d totally say that--putting it in!” my document is generally 20-30,000 words. This is normal for me, because I word vomit lol. I like writing long, meaty pieces that probably have way too much detail and dialogue, but HEY I have fun with it. So your muscle-stage document doesn’t need to be that long (or it can be longer!).
Once the muscle stage is done, it’s time to actually put some flesh on this baby and put in all of those details I love and ramble on for paragraphs that I’ll probably wind up cutting in editing anyway. My muscly document generally grows 3-4-fold in this process, after which I have a proper first draft!
From then, it’s editing; I have a few trusty betas who get the chapters/installments ahead of time and point out typos along the way as well as ask questions and offer feedback; that’s DEFINITELY something you’ll want! It’s way too easy to get caught up in your own stuff, and even your own characters and worlds you’ll forget details about that readers will be like “hey didn’t so-and-so already mention something about that in Chapter 2?”
After it’s all beta read and spell-checked and gone over with a fine-toothed comb, then comes the publication. If you’re self-published, this is the “““““fun”““““ part. I publish to Amazon (through Kindle/KDP), Smashwords (which puts me on Nook and iBooks IIRC?), and my personal website, and then it’s all word-of-mouth to get readers to settle down with my stuff :) Pricing is something you’d need to think about; Amazon doesn’t really let you offer stuff for free (not without some complicated maneuvering), so even though Fellfire Summer was free on most sites, it was something like $2.99 there. Pricing is really entirely up to you, though there are resources to help you decide how much to offer it for (Amazon even tells you how much you should probably sell for when you upload).
If there’s anything else you’re interested in/curious about, let me know! Also any other authors who follow me and want to shoot me down let this lovely asker know about THEIR process, please feel free!

Augmented Reality in Education
Here’s my learning partner Harry’s article.
Augmented Reality in Education
Augmented reality in education will soon affect the conventional learning process. AR has the potential to change the location and timing of studying, to introduce new and additional ways and methods. Capabilities of Augmented Reality technology may make classes more engaging and information more apprehendable.
Educators know that the learning process should be all about creativity and interaction. While teachers do not necessarily need to recruit all students into science, their goal is to get them interested in a subject. That’s where AR could come in handy.
Augmented Reality in education
Nowadays 80% of young people own smartphones. Most of them are active smartphone users that use these gadgets to access social platforms, play games and to be in connection with friends and relatives. In the meantime, much lesser part of young adults uses phones for studying purposes, to do the homework, dig information about a subject, etc.
Let's Build Your AR app
Provide us with your contact details and we will contact you today
Top of Form
Bottom of Form
The potential of combining smartphones and Augmented Reality for education is big, though it still has to be fully discovered. AR, in various ways, could grant students extra digital information about any subject, and make complex information easier to understand.
Nowadays we may find some excellent examples of augmented reality in education worldwide. Ability to connect reality and digital content has been steadily improving, opening more options for teachers and students.
 #1 Augmented Reality classroom
Augmented reality animated content in classroom lessons could catch students’ attention in our dynamic day and age, as well as motivate them to study.  Adding extra data, e.g. a short bio of a person, fun facts, historical data about sites or events, visual 3D models, would give students a wider understanding of topics.
While doing homework, students may scan certain elements of a book and receive text, audio or video tips from teachers. Or they may find useful information about the course, a teacher or other students which could lead to better communication.
#2 Explain abstract and difficult concepts
AR technology has an ability to render objects that are hard to imagine and turn them into 3D models, thus making it easier to grasp the abstract and difficult content. This is especially good for visual learners and practically anyone to translate theoretical material into a real concept. For example, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria in Portugal integrates AR into math lessons and students report it as helpful, easy and interesting.
#3 Engagement and interaction
By incorporating Augmented Reality into lessons teachers are able to involve students into the process with 3-dimensional models. It may be just a part of the lesson, like a teaser, or the support of the main topic with extra info from a different perspective. Like this case, when a Canadian tech company CASE transformed the wall of the school gym into a ball game by adding Augmented Reality layer to it. Kids through balls onto a wall to hit floating shapes and so have fun physical exercises.
#4 Discover and learn
Visitors of museums could access AR via smartphones and discover historical content related to objects. Additional information about what they see, though due to space or budget limitations, not all museums and landmarks can afford this. Once AR becomes more available, there will be new great opportunities for museums. The upside is that Augmented reality is already accessible to visitors through mobile devices.
#5 Objects modeling
Manual training, hand exercises, quiz solving etc. help earn a better knowledge of any lesson. AR apps for medical students may be one of the ways to learn human anatomy, explore more deeply. Augmented Reality basically means interaction with 3D models. And you can set the rotation, transparency, color scheme, styles etc. Finally, there could be more advanced animations via special gadgets like holographic lenses, instead of smartphones.
#6 Training
In many cases, theoretical knowledge is not enough to obtain proper skills in professional areas. Students shouldn’t be mere listeners and passive observers. Students of technical faculties especially need practice and hands-on experience in their areas. Through interaction, unlike VR, AR features could help perform a virtual practice – with augmented tutorials, digital modeling, and simulations, and acquire some experience in the end. It is not a secret that motivated and engaged students will understand a subject better and learn faster.
Augmented Reality Education Apps
Within augmented reality, in education, we can divide it into 3 categories of apps: the ones specialized for students, the ones for kids, and apps for self-education. Let’s start off with a few examples of AR apps for students.
Augmented reality apps for students
Elements 4D (Android / iOS) by DAQRI studio, an app for studying chemistry. It allows combining different elements as the simulation, to see how they would react in reality. To start it special triggers on printed cards are used. On their website, you can find lessons plans suitable for high school, secondary and elementary school programs. Take a look:
Anatomy 4D (iOS / Android) is best suitable for medical students. By scanning printed targets the application shows 3D models of a human body and allows to interact with it. Users may change and adjust any part of the human body, learn more about parts, joints, functions etc.
Corinth Micro Anatomy, available for Windows Mobile, is another human anatomy application that may be interesting for medical staff. Or Human Heart 3D app with less content, but more specific – to explore human heart in details. 3D model of a heart completed with various animations and textual tips about it.
AugThat (Android / iOS), designed by a former teacher, is the application that brings AR in a classroom. AugThat mainly targets students who lack motivation with help of 360-degree virtual photos and multiple 3D experiences.
Augmented Reality apps for kids
Math alive, developed for kids in up to 3rd grades, connect a computer, a camera, and specially printed cards. Pupils under a teacher supervision place cards in front of a camera, practicing basic counting skills. Animal Alphabet AR Flashcards is a similar AR app but for learning letters, the application brings cards “into life” by showing live animals when the answer is correct.
ZooKazam or Bugs 3D. ZooKazam (Android / iOS) in order to teach about animal species offers animated 3D models and various info-graphics about mammals, insects, fish, birds, and reptiles. Bugs 3D (Android) helps kids to know more about insects, placing quests and questions about them and showing descriptions and images to play with.
For fun activities, art and drawing there are Quiver and Chromville. To learn about plants and flora there is Arloon Plants (Android / iOS.). For the smallest kids check out Pete the Cat: School Jam app – it serves “pre-education” goals, like to teach empathy for live beings, as well as creativity.
AR learning & self-education apps
Google Translate (Android / iOS) is just great for studying foreign languages without a dictionary. By using Google Translate special “AR mode” you may instantly check up unknown words. Works well both for students and tourists, to navigate in cities abroad.

Tools/Platforms to create AR content
There is a category of AR apps that isn’t for educational purposes primarily, but they may serve as a tool to create augmented reality content for various subjects. Check out some of the following (the list is not exhaustive).
·         Augment (Android and iOS) with packages suitable for educational purposes in schools and universities. The platform provides options to create 3D models, as well as multiple other useful features.
·         ZVR, a powerful tool by Zspace that comes with an extensive toolkit to create educational materials. Students equipped with special glasses could interact with AR objects, while there may also be used by engineers and designers.
·         Daqri Studio, the application to make AR projects and experiences, with examples of education apps like  Anatomy 4D, Elements 4D.
·         Blippar (Android / iOS) an AR creation tool already used for many educational projects and partnered with different media outlets. It visualizes topics and objects from print material turning it into 3D interactive models.
·         Aurasma and Layar, two powerful and popular tools to create AR content designed by Layar Creator. Both of them have potential in many areas, not just education. Coming with user-friendly constructors, guides and tutorials, YouTube videos, audio tracks, images, https links, 3D models etc.
Conclusion
Despite the rising use of Augmented Reality in many areas of the modern era, augmented reality in education is still new and unsettled. Though possibilities of AR in teaching/studying are great, providing new ways of learning. Teachers get to catch the attention of students and motivate them better, while students get new tools to visualize their subjects and complex concepts, as well as obtain practical skills. Moreover, even parents can benefit – by engaging their children to study with playful apps.
